Students Speak About the Re-Opening of Public Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As a member of The Alliance for Newark Public Schools, NJ Communities United has been a leader in the successful struggle to restore local control. With full local control restored as of July 1, 2020, we continue to be advocates for public schools.

Together with the Alliance for Newark Public Schools, NJ Communities United distributed a community survey to  teachers, parents, and students to understand  how the Newark Public School district handled the response to the COVID-19 State of Emergency and to learn the concerns about re-opening Newark’s  schools.

We learned that students missed the important social interactions that come with in person education,  but remain concerned about health and safety during COVID-19. Ayanna Gonzalez - a sophomore at Barringer High School- shared her thoughts in a video during the virtual town hall meeting broadcast by the Alliance for Newark Public Schools.
