Subject: On Child Care, New Jersey Needs Your Leadership Dear Governor Sherrill, Congratulations on your inauguration. There are many challenges that require your attention, and the childcare crisis is one of the most urgent issues facing our state. Too many families are priced out of the system; the incredibly skilled and dedicated childcare workforce is undervalued and underpaid, and our economic potential is limited.  

New Jersey needs a bold, structural solution. We urge your administration to champion the establishment of a Child Care for ALL program, ensuring that high-quality, affordable childcare is accessible to every family who needs it, as a public good. To achieve this, we call on you to take decisive action on these key policies:

- Fully fund and significantly expand the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) to include families earning up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Threshold, with reimbursement rates that cover the true cost of quality care.

- Invest directly into the childcare workforce, using public funds to raise wages for family childcare providers and establish access to basic benefits like healthcare and retirement.

- Eliminate the restrictive five-child cap on licensed family childcare homes to foster the growth of community-based, culturally relevant childcare options in neighborhoods across the state.

- Stabilize provider funding by permanently basing childcare subsidy payments on enrollment, not daily attendance, allowing for consistent operations and quality staffing.

Childcare is an essential economic infrastructure. How your administration chooses to act on this issue will be a defining measure of its commitment to working families, racial and gender equity, and a stronger New Jersey. I am hopeful that you will demonstrate a clear vision for a childcare system that centers on racial, gender, and economic justice - and I am prepared to support that kind of bold leadership on this critical issue.

Subject: En el cuidado infantil, Nueva Jersey necesita su liderazgo  

Estimada gobernadora Sherrill:  

Felicidades por su inauguración. Hay muchos desafíos que requieren su atención, y la crisis del cuidado infantil es uno de los problemas más urgentes que enfrenta nuestro estado. Demasiadas familias no pueden acceder al sistema debido a los altos costos; la fuerza laboral de cuidado infantil, increíblemente capacitada y comprometida, está subvalorada y mal pagada, y nuestro potencial económico se ve limitado.  

Nueva Jersey necesita una solución audaz y estructural.  

Instamos a su administración a que impulse el establecimiento de un programa de cuidado infantil para TODOS, garantizando que el cuidado infantil de alta calidad sea accesible para todas las familias que lo necesiten, como un bien público.   

Para lograrlo, le instamos a tomar medidas decisivas sobre estas políticas clave:  

- Financiar completamente y ampliar significativamente el Programa de Asistencia para el Cuidado Infantil (CCAP) para incluir a las familias que ganan hasta el 300% del umbral de pobreza federal, con tarifas que cubran el costo real de una atención de calidad.  

- Invertir directamente en la fuerza laboral del cuidado infantil, utilizando fondos públicos para aumentar los salarios de los proveedores de cuidado infantil familiar y establecer el acceso a beneficios básicos como atención médica y jubilación.  

- Eliminar el límite restrictivo de cinco niños en los hogares de cuidado infantil familiar para fomentar el crecimiento de opciones de cuidado infantil comunitarias y culturalmente relevantes en los vecindarios a través del estado.  

- Estabilizar la financiación de los proveedores basando permanentemente los pagos de subsidios para el cuidado infantil en la matrícula, no en la asistencia diaria, lo que permite operaciones consistentes y personal de calidad.  

El cuidado infantil es una infraestructura económica esencial. La forma en que su administración decida actuar sobre este tema será una medida determinante de su compromiso con las familias trabajadoras, la equidad racial y de género, y un New Jersey más fuerte. Espero que demuestre una visión clara para un sistema de cuidado infantil centrado en la justicia racial, de género y económica, y puedo apoyar ese tipo de liderazgo audaz en este tema crítico.
