Privacy Policy — NJ Communities United
Last updated: October 7, 2026
NJ Communities United ("NJCU," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit our website, sign up for updates, donate, volunteer, take action with us, or otherwise engage with our organization — and how we use, share, and protect it.
By using our website, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the site (and if you ever want us to delete your information, just ask — see "Your choices and rights" below).
1. Information we collect
Information you give us directly:
- Contact info — name, email address, phone number, mailing address
- Volunteer info — skills, availability, languages spoken, areas of interest
- Donation info — donation amount, billing address, employer and occupation (required by law for certain donations)
- Advocacy actions — petitions, event RSVPs, surveys, pledge signatures, public comments
- Communications — emails, texts, calls, or letters you send us
- Content you submit — photos, stories, testimonials (only with your permission)
Information collected automatically:
- Log data — IP address, browser type, device, pages visited, referring site
- Cookies and similar tech — used for site functionality, analytics, and (if enabled) measuring the reach of our campaigns. See Section 5.
Information from other sources:
- From NationBuilder, our website and database platform, which may help us match your record to public or commercially available data (e.g., confirming your address or voter file status — never your voting choices)
- From partner organizations, when you've given them permission to share your info with us
- From event co-hosts or coalition partners for events you attended
2. How we use your information
We use your information to:
- Run our organizing work — mobilize members, run campaigns, and hold events
- Send you updates, action alerts, newsletters, and fundraising appeals by email, text, phone, or mail (you can opt out anytime)
- Process donations and comply with legal reporting requirements
- Improve our website and understand what content and campaigns resonate
- Respond to your questions and requests
If you're in New Jersey and we send you texts: by providing your phone number, you consent to receive recurring automated and manual texts from NJ Communities United at that number. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out, HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of purchase or donation.
3. How we share your information
We do not sell your personal information. Period.
We may share your information only in these limited situations:
- Service providers — NationBuilder (our CRM/website platform), payment processors, email/SMS providers, and analytics tools, who process data on our behalf under their own privacy obligations
- Legal requirements — if required by law, subpoena, or to protect rights and safety
- Coalition work — with partner organizations when you've explicitly opted in (e.g., co-sponsored petition), and we always tell you who's getting it
- Public content you submit — petition signers may be presented by name (never address or phone) when delivering to decision-makers, unless you choose to sign anonymously
4. Donations
Donation payments are processed by our payment processor; we never see or store your full credit card number. We keep donation records as required for legal compliance and reporting.
5. Cookies and tracking
We use cookies and similar technologies to keep the site working, remember your preferences, and understand site traffic. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies — but parts of the site may not work properly if you do.
6. Your choices and rights
- Email: click the unsubscribe link in any email
- Text messages: reply STOP
- Mail/phone: contact us using the info below
- Access, correction, or deletion: email us anytime to see what we have, fix it, or have it deleted (subject to legal recordkeeping requirements)
We honor every request, no matter where you live — and New Jersey's Data Privacy Act gives state residents additional rights, which we're happy to honor for everyone.
7. Data security and retention
We use industry-standard safeguards (encrypted connections, access controls, two-factor authentication on staff accounts) and limit staff access to what they need for their work. We keep your information as long as you're engaged with us and as required for legal compliance, then we delete or anonymize it.
No system is 100% secure. If we ever learn of a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you as required by law.
8. Children
Our website and organizing work are directed at adults. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
9. Links to other sites
Our site links to other organizations, news sites, and social platforms. Once you click away, their privacy policies apply — not ours. Read them too.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll post the updated version here with a new "last updated" date. For significant changes, we'll notify you by email or a notice on our site.
